Ever since Alex Pereira's first appearance at 205, it was clear to all the fans that not only is he a MASSIVE human at 205, but that cut to 185 must have nearly killed him each time he made middleweight. With a 6 foot 4 inch frame, Poatan is just as tall as our current Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and is just an inch shy of the infamous interim champ Tom Aspinall. Of course he'd have a bit of weight to put on to completely even the playing field but just as recently as this year we've seen heavyweights light Jailton Almeida debut and go on short tears in fights where he was barely getting to 230lbs on fight night which is exactly what Poatan weighed in the octagon his last time out.
So this begs the question, why isn't a move up to heavyweight for Poatan even in consideration with the big chief Dana White when it seems so obvious and intriguing to fans everywhere? An opportunity to become the first ever Triple-Champ in history? Here's Dana's response to a reporter at the UFC 304 Post Fight Press Conference when persistently asked about the topic.
any idea of potentially why Dana might not being jumping at this opportunity? You can likely imagine he's probably given some decent thought into before discussing at this press conference.
my thought is, the UFC doesn't truly think Pereira has very good chances against Aspinall. Which is totally an understandable position taking everything in and balancing the risk factor for a guy of Pereira's age and fight style. Aspinall is one of the biggest and most athletic fighters in all of the UFC, and he's just entering his prime at 31 years of age. The unfortunate reality is that if Jan Blachowitz can take you down and hold you in certain positions like he did to Pereira, Aspinall will likely do whatever he wants with all of his wrestling and grappling expertise. A stylistic nightmare for any striker, nonetheless a striker with an extreme size disadvantage.
Let us know what you think! Definitely an intriguing topic of discussion.
