Canelo Alvarez v Jermell Charlo
In a week without MMA, combat sports fans have full attention on this weekend boxing Pay-Per-View. This show is headlined by a big time matchup between two studs bringing multiple belts of their own. Canelo has reigned as the face of professional boxing since Floyd Mayweather retired. Jermell Charlo is coming into this scrap with a big time chip on his shoulder to prove his belonging in the upper echelon of boxing talent. The two combatants have shown respect with a healthy competitive tension in the build up to this one.
Starting out, let’s look at the main story on the undercard. Curmel Moton makes his professional debut, one of the most anticipated debuts this year. Moton is a Floyd Mayweather prodigy that is just 17 years of age. He has 18 amateur titles and a stunning record of 48 wins and 2 losses. Debuting at 17 is becoming more common, but debuting at 17 on a massive PPV could be rocket fuel for this already highly touted prospect. His style is crisp and precise, I am interested to see if he switches his game up a bit to add more KO power. Either way, Curmel is one to keep an eye out for Saturday Night.
Jumping into the main event, we got Canelo Alvarez as a decent favorite at -425. He is definitely the more proven fighter at the elite level. That -400 favorite number is actually quite a bit lower than he’s been in most of his recent fights. The mystique of Canelo may be fading as he starts to get older. Recently we have seen him in more competitive bouts, and in interviews it appears that he sees the light at the end of the tunnel. Canelo’s talked about endeavors after his boxing career more lately, mentioning golf as a passion of his. Jermell Charlo on the other hand seems fully focused on cementing a legacy in this sport, something Canelo has done time and time again.

Stylistically this is an interesting matchup as both guys are not afraid to get dirty. Canelo brings a very refined Mexican style that has been constantly evolving throughout his career. He downloads data early, and breaks his opponents down with a barrage of pressure and combinations. His defense is incredible as well, as he rarely takes damage in his fights. Charlo on the other hand is a style based around his athleticism and power. He likes to be the one setting the pace of the dance in the ring. Charlo’s not afraid to take a shot to give one either.
This fight is going to be a brutal chess match. Canelo has shown weakness to guys with more athleticism than him, but typically his pressure is able to wear those opponents down and he takes over late. Charlo’s power is maintained through 12 rounds. I think this fight goes to a decision either way. What my prediction ultimately comes down to in what should be a competitive and grueling scrap, HUNGRY DOG’S RUN FASTER.

Prediction: Jermell Charlo(+325) by decision(+550)
