In early February, headlines across MMA media read “Dustin Poirier v Benoit St Denis OFF of UFC 299”. This made sense given the morning before, Poirier posted a picture on his X account with the caption “My fights off, but still working”. Throughout the day rumors swirled, but they ultimately landed on the understanding that the bout was never officially signed even though it was officially announced. Honestly, a pretty bad look for the UFC, given the fact that they posted this a week before tickets for UFC 299 dropped. Clearly reeling for an insane look at a co-main event they desperately wanted both Poirier and St Denis to agree upon to get the fans more excited for an insanely stacked PPV in Miami.

This fight justified high ticket costs for the event given the star power that Dustin and the UFC would bring to South Florida. Poirier would have been the biggest of the bunch by far and this is a scrap that fight fans know is going to deliver. A violent, rapidly rising French prospect taking on an American legend is always a storyline that is going to get the fans going. The problem was that contracts were not officially signed by both fighters. It would be safe to assume Poirier wanted a little extra cheese in his negotiations given that he was the one risking
everything in this matchup. A win over St Denis will certainly get him back in the title talks at lightweight, but outside of that the Diamond’s bringing all the accolades, superstardom, and fighting a guy way down in the rankings for this one.
Regardless, knowing all of this, Dustin put his veteran savviness on display in just one post. A simple “Fight’s off” tweet stirred the MMA world into a frenzy. MMA media members were using it as a “gotcha” moment against Dana white and the UFC. Guilherme Cruz took this as an opportunity to lead the charge against the UFC by saying St Denis did not even know about the fight when it was announced. Dana White dropped the receipts with text messages proving Benoit knew. He also added a few choice words and a middle finger emoji in the caption on his instagram story. While all this was happening Dustin Poirier was getting closer and closer to getting what he wanted. The bad publicity would have been a black eye for the UFC and a bad hit to the UFC 299 card that had so many fans excited. Eventually the UFC caved, and as you can imagine, were forced to make it work with the Diamond.
